FirstBuild’s Sourdough Sidekick earned a place today on TIME’s Best Inventions of 2026 list, recognizing a device FirstBuild says automates sourdough starter maintenance for home bakers (opens in a new tab). FirstBuild says its Auto mode lets users schedule starter preparation around when they plan to bake, including the quantity they need.
The device has been available nationwide since May 2026, following shipments to thousands of crowdfunding backers. Its original Indiegogo campaign began in March 2025 and met its funding target within 12 minutes.
TIME selected 300 inventions for this year’s recognition, drawing candidates from its editors, correspondents and an application process conducted online. Its assessment considered how original and effective each entry was, alongside its ambition and impact.
How it fits a baking routine
In Auto mode, FirstBuild says Sourdough Sidekick can work without user interaction for up to a week and prepare starter for a date and time the baker selects. The company also credits the automated maintenance with cutting waste and reducing the guesswork involved in caring for starter.
FirstBuild developed Sourdough Sidekick with contributions from its community and specialists at King Arthur Baking Company. For people beginning sourdough baking, FirstBuild presents the device as a way to make getting started easier. For experienced bakers, the company says it simplifies ongoing care while helping get starter ready for their planned baking day.
