Let the display choose your next move
- Read the display first. CL means Child Lock, so use the controls marked for that setting.
- For a locked door, follow the branch that fits: high water, hot water, a power interruption or a completed Remote Start wash.
- Match the Child Lock controls to your LG front-load washer. The button combination varies by model.
If Power responds but your other buttons won't, we'd check Child Lock first because that setting deliberately disables the other controls. It gives you a useful first check before moving to the separate conditions that keep the door locked.
The door lock protects you and your home from injury or damage while the washer is in use. Clearing a control setting and releasing that protective door lock are separate jobs, so choose your next action by what the machine is doing.
Why the buttons stay unresponsive
CL stands for Child Lock. It locks the control panel during a cycle to prevent accidental changes and potential accidents caused by a child or another person operating the buttons. When you disable it, you're removing that protection so you can use the controls again.
With Child Lock active, all buttons except Power are disabled. Finishing a cycle doesn't automatically turn the setting off, which explains why you can come back to a completed load and still be unable to change the cycle or its settings.
Disable Child Lock before changing those settings. CL on the display identifies this branch, and the Child Lock icon illuminates when the washer is powered on with the feature enabled. If you're looking at an unfamiliar lock symbol, use your model's manual to identify the marking and its controls.
Which buttons should you hold?
Find the buttons marked with a lock icon or labelled *Child Lock. LG's US Child Lock instructions (opens in a new tab) give a general hold time of at least three seconds. The same marked controls turn the feature on and off.
Match the marking on your own panel to the applicable example below. LG's general guide covers different products, so its controls and illustrations can differ from yours. When the markings don't match, refer to your model's user manual for the correct combination.
- Temp + Rinse example: where a lock symbol links the temperature and rinse buttons, hold both together. LG's numbered instruction says three seconds, while its accompanying description says more than three seconds.
- Spin example: where *Child Lock is marked below Spin, hold Spin for three seconds. Use the marked Spin button on the washer control panel.
- Steam example: on a model with the Steam function and a Child Lock marking beneath Steam, hold Steam for three seconds.
After releasing the marked controls, check whether you can make the cycle or setting change you wanted. That's the practical outcome of disabling the panel lock. If the door remains locked, continue with the door conditions below.
Water is still high in the drum
Use the washer's controls to drain the drum when a high water level is keeping the door locked. The following sequence comes from LG's US locked-washer recovery guidance (opens in a new tab).
- Press Power to turn the washer on, then check that it's powered on.
- Press Spin repeatedly until your desired spin speed is selected.
- Press Start/Pause to begin, then let the cycle drain the water from the drum.
LG calls this the drain-only function, even though its sequence asks you to select your desired spin speed. Once the water has drained, pause or stop the cycle for the door to unlock.
Check the result after the water has drained. If the washer is also hot, continue to the cooling branch below before trying to open the door.
The washer needs to cool
Wait when the water temperature is too hot. The door can unlock once the washer has cooled and there's no water inside it. Both conditions matter, so a drained drum still needs time to cool if it's hot.
LG says the drum can take up to 20 minutes to cool enough for unlocking, depending on the home's temperature and the load size. The condition of the washer determines when it can release, so use that time as a cooling window rather than a countdown to opening the door.
If the washer has cooled, is empty of water and still won't open, LG's US door-recovery instructions (opens in a new tab) say to unplug the power cord and wait three to five minutes. The door should then open normally. This unplugging step follows the cooling and empty-drum checks.
The power went out during the wash
A short interruption is another reason LG lists for a door staying locked. This branch depends on what happened to the power during the wash, so think back to whether it briefly went out before the door stopped opening.
After a brief outage, the door remains locked until the next time the washer is powered on. Turn it on once power is available. LG separately says an outage lasting longer than three to five minutes allows the door to unlock automatically.
If the door stays locked after power returns, use the water-level and temperature checks above to choose the applicable next action.
A remotely started wash has finished
Check whether Keep Remote Start ON is enabled if the door remains locked after a remotely started wash finishes. You can check remote-control status on the washer or in ThinQ after operation finishes. With this option enabled, the washer stays powered on and the door can't open because it remains locked for further remote washing.
To release the door now, press Power on the washer or use the Power button in the ThinQ app. In this completed-cycle situation, the door unlocks shortly after the washer turns off. Once the door is released, additional washing can't be done remotely.
For automatic unlocking after washing finishes, open Useful Features in ThinQ, select Manage Laundry and turn off Keep Remote Start ON. With that option disabled, the washer automatically turns off and releases the door at the end of washing, without an additional action.

When you need LG's help
If the correct Child Lock controls remain unresponsive, contact LG customer support for assistance. LG identifies that response as a possible malfunction, so that's the point to get help with the controls.
