How to Unlock an LG Front-Load Washing Machine

Is CL showing, or is the door still locked?

A front-load door that will not open differs from one that will not latch and start. We'd clear CL first when Power works but the other buttons do not, because the setting locks the controls. The door's separate safety lock stays engaged while the drum moves, water remains, or the washer is hot.

CL is on and the buttons will not respond

CL is Child Lock, also called Control Lock. It disables most buttons while usually leaving Power available, and it can remain active after a cycle or after you turn the washer off.

Power the washer on and find the printed lock symbol or Child Lock label. Hold the marked control for about 3 seconds, or for 3 to 5 seconds if that interval is printed on your panel. • A lock symbol joining Temp and Rinse: hold both buttons together until CL disappears.
• *Child Lock beneath Spin or Child Lock beneath Steam: hold the marked button until the lock indication clears.

When CL disappears, try changing a setting to confirm the controls respond. If the marked hold produces no change, make sure Power is on and try it again.

The wash is running and you need the door open

A front-load door stays locked while its drum moves. Pressing Start/Pause requests a stop; the latch releases only after the washer has reached a safe state.

1. Press Start/Pause once. Watch the drum and leave the door closed while it slows.
2. When the drum has stopped, look through the glass for water and feel whether the door is hot. Drain visible water or let a hot washer cool before trying the handle.
3. Look at the lock indicator. If it goes out, pull the handle gently; the door should open. If the light stays on, continue with the drain or cooling steps below.

Water is still visible behind the door

A front loader keeps its door locked when the water level could spill through the opening. We'd try the drain controls first because they remove the water without opening the service panel. A blocked pump filter or restricted discharge hose can explain why that attempt fails.

1. Turn the washer on if it is off and clear CL first if the controls are locked. Press Start/Pause to pause the current cycle, or cancel it.
2. Select Drain, Drain Only, or Spin Only. If your panel uses a Spin button, press it to select the spin setting, then press Start/Pause.
3. Let the drain and any drum movement finish. When water is no longer visible at the door, the drum has stopped, and the lock indicator goes out, try the handle gently.

If the drain does not start or water remains, look at the external discharge hose for a kink, pinch, or visible blockage. Straighten a crushed section and try Drain or Spin Only again. Drain the water through the small service hose

The lower front service panel lets you empty a front loader when its drain cycle cannot finish.

1. Turn the washer off and unplug it. After a hot wash, let the water cool before opening the hose; hot wash water can burn.
2. Put towels and a shallow pan below the service panel low on the front of the washer. Open the panel and pull the small capped hose into the pan without kinking it.
3. Remove the hose cap and let water run into the pan. Refit the cap whenever the pan needs emptying, then repeat until water stops flowing.

Clear the pump filter and test the drain again

Lint and small objects can block the filter beside the service hose. Clear it only after the hose has stopped draining; LG's pump-filter instructions (opens in a new tab) show the lower front access area.

1. Do not unscrew the large filter before draining through the small hose. Retained water can rush out, and hot water can burn. Drain and cool the washer first. With the washer still unplugged, turn the large filter counterclockwise and remove it. Use a soft brush to clear lint and small objects from the filter and its opening.
2. Refit the filter firmly. Cap and clip the small hose back into place, then close the service panel. A loose filter or cap can leak.
3. Reconnect power and run Drain or Spin Only. Watch the service panel for leaks while water drains.
4. Once the washer is empty and the drum has stopped, wait for the lock light to go out and open the door gently.

The washer is empty, but the door is still locked

After the drum stops, allow about 2 to 3 minutes for normal release. A hot or steam cycle can hold the lock longer, for up to about 20 minutes while the washer cools. Leave the door closed until it is cool and no water remains; LG's locked-door help (opens in a new tab) covers that cooling and release sequence.

If power failed during the cycle, restore it and turn the washer on. That lets the normal release or drain sequence run. If the washer is now stopped, cool, and empty but the lock still holds, turn it off, unplug it for 3 to 5 minutes, reconnect it, and try the release or drain command again.

For a panel that remains unresponsive, hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds while the washer is unplugged, then reconnect power and try again. Unplugging does not clear persistent CL or make a hot, water-filled door safe to open. If the panel remains unresponsive, arrange a diagnosis. If only the cool, empty door remains shut, try the gentle handle-release step next.

1. With the drum stopped and no water or heat remaining, unplug the washer.
2. Wait 1 to 2 minutes.
3. Gently push the door handle inward toward the washer, then pull it forward. The door should open with a gentle pull. If it stays shut, stop pulling.

If the gentle handle step fails, or draining still fails after the hose and filter checks, contact LG support or an authorized LG servicer if warranty coverage may apply. Otherwise, arrange an appliance repair diagnosis. Give them the exact display code and the results of the drain and reset attempts.

Make sure the lock and drain keep working

After clearing a drain obstruction, use an empty wash cycle to see whether the washer drains and releases normally. The door should open and latch gently afterward, with no returning lock or drain code and no leak at the service panel.

If the test passes, empty pockets before future loads so small objects do not reach the drain. Clean the accessible front-load pump filter about once a month and keep the external discharge hose clear. If a test brings back standing water, a lock fault, or leakage, report that result with the earlier recovery attempts when you arrange repair.
