Start with where the water sits
- Food debris, too many suds, and a restricted hose or sink drain can leave water behind.
- Some water may be normal. Compare it with your model's normal level before treating it as a fault.
- Confirm the cycle finished, then use your model's cancel or drain control.
- Check for foam and a slow sink before cleaning an owner-removable filter.
- If excess water remains after those checks, book appliance service.
You open the door expecting clean dishes and find water instead. We'd check where the water sits and whether the cycle finished first, because either answer can change what you need to do next.

The normal amount depends on the filter. On GE dishwashers with an Ultra-Fine filter, water sitting in the filter well is normal, but it shouldn't cover the bottom of the tub. On GE models without that filter, 1 to 2 cups of clean water across the bottom is normal. For another design, use its model guidance before treating retained water as a fault. If that normal amount is all that's left after a finished cycle with no error, there's nothing to fix.
- Look at the water. If it's confined to the filter well, compare it with your model's normal level. If it covers the tub floor, check whether the cycle finished.
- Read the display before pressing anything, and photograph any error. If the cycle paused, resume it using your controls. If it ended, use the model's cancel or drain control and watch whether the water level falls.
- Look for foam. If you see suds, turn the dishwasher off and let them dissipate before running anything. If there are no suds, check the sink and air gap.
- Check whether the kitchen sink drains normally, water spills from an air gap, or the problem began after installation work. Those results point to a plumber or installer. If the sink is clear, move to the filter.
- Disconnect power and clean only a filter your model lets you remove. After the next normal cycle, more water than your model's normal level means it's time to book appliance service.
Why water gets stuck in the tub
Food debris in a filter or pump area, too many suds, and a restricted or wrongly routed drain hose can all leave water behind. A new disposer can block the drain if its dishwasher-inlet plug was left in place.

Check the cycle, then try the drain control
Opening the door can pause a cycle, so first check the display and whether the machine is waiting to resume. If the cycle has ended, find the cancel or drain control for your model, close the door as directed and let it finish. A falling water level tells you the machine can pump water out. If a lot remains, check the sink and filter next.

Heavy foam changes the plan. Turn the dishwasher off and let the suds die down before you run anything, because too many suds can stop it draining properly. Use dishwasher detergent when you run it again.
Keep chemical drain cleaner out of the dishwasher. It can damage dishwasher parts.
What the kitchen sink tells you
Your dishwasher drains into the same plumbing as your kitchen sink. We'd check that path before blaming the dishwasher, especially if the trouble began after a new disposer or dishwasher went in.

Clean the filter your dishwasher lets you remove
Many removable filters twist free, but some filter parts sit behind a fastened cover and some machines have no owner-removable parts. We'd start with the parts designed to lift out by hand. A fixed grille or a part that won't move needs the model's instructions before you go further.

- Disconnect the dishwasher from its power supply. Switching it off at the controls doesn't cut the power. Give it time to cool after a cycle, because the heating element can burn you (GE says at least 20 minutes).
- Pull out the bottom rack and look at the filter area. If you see broken glass or can't reach the filter safely, stop and book service. Don't feel around in cloudy water.
- Remove only the filter parts your model allows you to lift or turn out. Rinse them with water, using a soft brush only where that filter's instructions allow it.
- Put every removable part back in its proper position and lock it in place. Don't run the dishwasher with a filter missing or loose, because debris can get into the pump.
- Reconnect power and watch the next normal cycle. If excess water remains after it finishes, stop running cycles and book appliance service.
When water comes back between uses
Water that never drained and water that shows up later are different clues. Dirty water building up between uses can point to a drain hose that wasn't installed properly.
Leave the hose where it is and have an installer or plumber check its routing. Note whether the returning water is dirty or clear, and when you first saw it.
Humming, errors and the service decision
A hum or an error code gives a technician a useful clue. A blocked filter, hose or pump area can all leave water in the tub, so record the sound or code and let the technician confirm the fault before any part is ordered.
If the sink drains normally but excess water remains after the drain command and filter check, book appliance service. Check your warranty or service plan first. Have the full model number, proof of purchase, error photo and a note of what you've checked ready when you book.

Questions that come up after the checks
Can the dishwasher drain be blocked if the sink is clear?
Yes. A restriction or routing problem in the dishwasher's own drain hose can still hold water back. If the filter is clean and excess water remains, book appliance service.
What if the filter won't twist free?
Leave it in place and use the removal instructions for your model. Some filters have fasteners, and some filter-area parts aren't removable.
Does a humming sound mean I need a new pump?
