Check the charging connection before buying a battery

The quick read
  • On a Shark RV1000AE, make sure the base has power. It should be plugged in, with its switch at I/On and its green light on.
  • Switch the robot off, wipe the charging pads on the robot and base with a dry cloth, then dock it with its back against the base and both switches at I/On.
  • Charging has started when the robot beeps, its battery light flashes blue and the base's blue light pulses.
  • Still no blue after a careful clean and redock? Contact Shark support. Stop charging if you see swelling, leaking or damage, and keep away from a battery that's smoking.

When a robot sits on its base and won't charge, it's tempting to order a new battery. We'd do one careful clean and redock and read the lights first. The green light on the base only tells you the base has power. Blue is what shows the robot is charging.

The steps here are for the Shark RV1000AE with its self-empty base (opens in a new tab), so check that your robot, base and power supply match that model before you start. Don't carry them over to another Shark robot without checking that robot's own guide. If yours is a different model, find the model number on the label on the back or bottom of the robot and search for it on Shark's product support page (opens in a new tab).

StopStop using and charging the robot or base if there's liquid damage, damaged contacts or wiring, unusual heat, swelling, leakage, an odor or abnormal noises. Keep away from a smoking battery, and call 911 if there's a fire. Don't open or repair the battery pack, bridge the contacts or use an unapproved charger.

Charge it indoors at room temperature. The RV1000AE shouldn't be stored, charged or used below 50°F (10°C) or above 104°F (40°C), because temperatures outside that range can damage the battery and raise the risk of fire. If it's been somewhere colder or hotter, let the robot and battery reach room temperature before charging.

Clean the contacts and redock it

Work through these in order. The robot stays switched off while you handle it and only goes back on once it's sitting on the base.

  1. Check that the base is plugged into a working outlet and its power switch is at I/On. Its green power light should come on. If it stays off, try a different outlet. Don't use a damaged outlet, and don't keep resetting a tripped circuit.
  2. Before you lift or clean the robot, set the power switch on its side to Off. Turn the base off and unplug it by the plug, not the cord. Keep your fingers out of the gap between the bumper and the robot's body as you lift it.
  3. Gently wipe the dust off the charging pads and sensors on the robot's underside and on the base with a dry cloth. Keep liquids and cleaning sprays away from these parts.
  4. Set the robot upright with its back against the base, so its underside pads line up with the base's charging contacts and its dust bin touches the base's debris intake. Don't force it or press it down.
  5. Plug the base back in and set both the base and the robot power switches to I/On, without lifting the robot again.
  6. Listen for the charging beep and check the lights. Once charging has started, allow up to six hours for a full charge.

Go by what the robot and base are doing right now rather than the battery percentage in the app. Note which lights you see when you dock it and again after charging.

Skip button-hold resets written for other Shark models. On the RV1000AE, holding CLEAN for 15 seconds turns Recharge & Resume on or off.

It charges on the base but can't find its way back

If it charges when you set it on the base yourself, look at where the base sits and the robot's route back to it. The base should have its back against a wall on bare, level floor, with at least three feet clear on each side and five feet in front, away from heating elements and direct sunlight.

Look for loose cords or objects in the way, and think about whether the base was moved. Moving this base means the robot has to remap your home, so contact Shark support about the next step before you erase a map. Leave any stair protection in place, and don't test the return trip near an unprotected drop.

If it reaches a full charge but now runs for much less time, write down the cleaning mode, how long it ran and whether the drop was gradual or sudden. That history helps Shark support judge the battery.

When to contact Shark support

If it still won't charge after one careful clean and redock, contact Shark product support (opens in a new tab). Have the full model numbers of the robot and base, the adapter details and the light pattern you saw ready.

We'd confirm any replacement battery, base or power supply against your complete model number before ordering, because a part with a similar name, shape or plug can still be the wrong one. Leave internal charging repairs and any damaged battery to Shark's service.
