Choose your first check
- Check that the refrigerator's water supply is on. A restricted supply or clogged filter can leave you with slow flow or none at all.
- On Whirlpool French door bottom freezer refrigerators, also check the dispenser settings, paddle engagement and filter seating.
- If the basic checks don't restore dispensing, contact the manufacturer's support team or schedule service.
An empty glass and a slowly filling one both make the existing water supply worth checking. We'd begin there because the refrigerator needs an open supply valve, and a kink can restrict the water reaching it. If you just changed a Whirlpool filter, we'd move its seating check ahead of the other checks because improper installation can stop flow.
On refrigerators equipped with a water filter, a clogged or partly clogged cartridge can cause either symptom. Whirlpool's additional checks cover controls that deliberately disable dispensing and a paddle that isn't fully engaged, so there's useful owner-level work before a service appointment.
Water needs an open path to the fridge
Verify that the existing water supply to your refrigerator is turned on and its supply valve is fully open. The valve has to let water reach the appliance before its dispenser can deliver any. This is also the first supply check in GE's dispenser troubleshooting guidance (opens in a new tab).
Next, look for kinks in the supply line. A kink can reduce flow, so straighten a kinked line to restore the water's path. Both Whirlpool and Maytag include this correction in their French door bottom freezer dispenser checks.
When positioning the refrigerator afterward, don't push it so far back against the wall or cabinet that the line becomes pinched. Keep that precaution attached to the correction: straightening the tubing won't help if its final position squeezes it again.
Whirlpool worked example when the controls seem inactive
For the Whirlpool French Door Bottom Freezer Refrigerator worked example, look for a lock symbol on the dispenser display. It typically indicates that control lock is enabled, which deactivates the dispenser controls and pad. The feature allows you to disable dispensing for cleaning or to prevent unintended use by children and pets.
Control lock leaves power on to the refrigerator, ice maker and dispenser light. A lit dispenser can therefore still have its controls disabled. Use your model's Owner's Manual or Quick Start Guide for the unlock procedure, as directed in Whirlpool's dispenser guidance (opens in a new tab).
If your model has Sabbath Mode, check its status too. While it's active, neither water nor ice dispenses, the electronic-control LEDs and interior lights are off, and the Sabbath button is the only light displaying. Temperature set points remain unchanged.
Use your model's instructions to exit that mode. The control sequence varies by model, so the useful check is whether the feature is active on yours before you change its settings.
Make sure the paddle is fully engaged
A glass touching the paddle may still leave it short of full engagement. On the Whirlpool example, incomplete engagement prevents water or ice from dispensing. Use the following dispensing check, with your Owner's Manual supplying the details for your model.
- If your model provides a water-or-ice selector on the display, select water and confirm that selection.
- Press a sturdy glass firmly against the dispenser paddle so it engages fully, and watch for water entering the glass.
- Remove the glass to stop dispensing, and check that the flow stops.

A newly fitted Whirlpool filter needs a seating check
If your Whirlpool dispenser stopped or slowed immediately after a filter installation, check how the cartridge is seated. Improper installation can reduce or stop water flow and cause leaks from the filter housing. The filter needs to lock into place and make a proper seal.
For this Whirlpool example, check the installation by removing the filter from its housing and trying to dispense water (opens in a new tab), using the dispensing check above. If water comes through with the filter removed, Whirlpool identifies improper filter installation as the issue.
Reinstall the filter, making sure it's locked in place with a proper seal, then check dispensing again. The result you're looking for is water flowing with the cartridge installed. That keeps the test tied to correcting the installation.
An older filter can restrict the flow
For an older Whirlpool filter, check its age and the replacement indicator. Whirlpool recommends replacement every six months, when the indicator light comes on, or as needed. Usage and water quality can make an earlier change necessary, so the calendar isn't the only reason to replace it.
A clogged filter can reduce the water reaching the dispenser. Replacing it regularly also helps maintain cleaner, fresher-tasting drinking water. When choosing a cartridge, match it to your refrigerator; Whirlpool recommends everydrop filters and selecting the correct replacement (opens in a new tab).
For a second brand example, Maytag's French door bottom freezer guidance (opens in a new tab) gives the same six-month, indicator-light or as-needed replacement advice. It also allows for earlier changes based on usage and water quality, and recommends an everydrop filter matched to the refrigerator.
Slow flow can also involve water pressure
Whirlpool identifies low water pressure as another cause of slow dispensing. Its guidance also lists small or hollow ice cubes and slow or absent ice production as possible effects of inadequate pressure. If you're seeing those symptoms together, include them when describing the problem to support.
If your refrigerator uses a reverse osmosis system, mention that connection too. Whirlpool explains that an RO connection can work, but the system can further reduce water pressure (opens in a new tab). That qualification matters when you're investigating a dispenser that still runs slowly.
Maytag gives the same RO pressure qualification (opens in a new tab) for its refrigerators. It describes a connection that can work while also reducing pressure, rather than promising compatibility with every refrigerator and RO setup.
Check the result, then arrange service if needed
After correcting an issue, use the dispensing check to see whether water flows again. For the Whirlpool filter-seating branch, check the result after reinstallation so you're assessing the refrigerator with its filter back in place.
