Arlo opens solar camera preorders

Arlo has introduced Essential Solar Security Camera and opened preorders at $99.99 MSRP. The company says shipping will begin in mid-October. Its announcement (opens in a new tab) lists a built-in solar panel rated at 1.2W and battery capacity of 14,790mAh.
Arlo claims two hours of daily sunshine can be enough to keep the camera powered. Starting with a full charge, the battery can last as long as six months without sunshine, the company says. Arlo lists 2K recording at 24 fps, a viewing angle of 130 degrees and an IP65 weather-resistance rating. It also lists Color Night Vision, a built-in spotlight using a white LED, and two-way conversations in the Arlo Secure app.
Arlo describes a slim housing with three holes for mounting. Its placement guidance calls for sunlight, a strong Wi-Fi signal and an unobstructed view. The company says its dual-band Wi-Fi selects whichever available connection is strongest.
AI features require a subscription
Arlo says subscription features include Threat Assessment, Event Captions and Arlo Summary. It names Smart Aware, Smart Secure and Ultra Secure as its three plan tiers.
Arlo cautions that battery duration varies according to usage, settings, recorded activity and environmental conditions.
Arlo lists compatibility with Samsung SmartThings, IFTTT, Google Home and Amazon Alexa. It says users can activate the camera's siren remotely in the Arlo Secure app.
