Hayward Industries is recalling its HDFS400 Universal-HC Series pool heaters because they can give off high levels of carbon monoxide while running, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Exposure to that gas carries a risk of serious injury or death (opens in a new tab).

The recall covers about 4,600 heaters sold nationwide from March 2026 through July 2026 for roughly $5,600 each. They went through pool equipment distributors, builders and service professionals. The units are dual-fuel gas heaters with a brown body and a black top, made in the United States by Hayward Industries, Inc. of Charlotte, North Carolina.

No incidents or injuries have been reported in connection with the heaters. The recall is number 26-777 and is designated a Fast Track Recall. Federal law bars selling recalled products.

To identify a recalled heater, find the name plate below the vent. The model number HDFS400 appears at the top of the plate, and the word Hayward sits at the bottom. The heater measures 21 inches long, 28 inches wide and 31 inches tall, and its output is rated at 400,000 BTU.
