What does the panel do when you press Start?

We'd wake a dark panel first: sleep or Control Lock can make a powered dishwasher seem dead. Lights or button tones send you to the door and settings.

The panel is dark and silent

Dry your hands and wipe moisture or grime from touch controls with a soft cloth. Press Power, or open and close the door and press Start. On a top-control dishwasher, open the door slightly to see the buttons along its upper edge; the display may stay blank until you select a cycle. A light or button tone sends you to the door and settings checks.

Before testing the outlet, look for a padlock, Lock light or CL. The Lock marking may sit beneath another key: hold that marked key, or the marked pair of keys, for about 3 seconds.

If nothing responds, look for the cord under the sink or in the next cabinet and turn on any switch controlling dishwasher power. For a hardwired dishwasher, use its marked breaker.

1. If there is no water or damage at the cord and outlet, push the plug fully into the outlet. Turn on the nearby or under-sink switch if it controls dishwasher power. If the panel wakes, select a cycle; if it stays dark, test the outlet.
2. Unplug the dishwasher and plug a known-working small appliance into that outlet. If the test appliance runs, power reaches the outlet and the fault points back toward the dishwasher. If it stays off, continue with the GFCI and breaker checks.

The outlet or breaker has no power

A GFCI may protect the outlet from a different nearby receptacle. A tripped breaker can sit between On and Off; use the labeled dishwasher handle on the panel front.

1. If the outlet and its protecting GFCI are dry, press Reset once. Retest with the small appliance. If it runs, reconnect the dishwasher and try the panel.
2. Find the labeled dishwasher breaker. If tripped, move it fully Off, then On once. Retest the outlet, or wake a hardwired dishwasher's panel.
3. If the outlet stays dead or protection trips again, leave the circuit off. A working outlet with a dishwasher that remains dark after the owner checks points to an appliance fault.

The buttons respond, but the wash will not begin

Slide both racks in and move utensils and pan handles clear of the door. Look for obstructing trim, then close the door until the latch catches without forcing it. The latch signals that the door is shut. A door that still will not catch or a damaged latch needs repair; do not bypass its switch.

A lock icon, lock light or CL points to Control Lock. Wake the panel and hold the key marked Lock, or the marked pair of keys, for about 3 seconds. The indicator should go out and cycle buttons should respond. Control Lock can remain on after a power cycle.

Select a cycle and press Start briefly. For front controls, close the door first. For top controls that require Start before closing, press it and shut the door within 3 to 4 seconds. If Start flashes or the machine beeps, repeat that sequence. A long Start press can cancel a cycle.

An hours countdown or Delay Start light means the wash is scheduled for later. Press Delay until the hours indicator disappears. If it remains, hold Start/Reset or Cancel/Drain for about 3 seconds to cancel the selection. Choose a fresh cycle and press Start; the delay indicator should go out and washing should begin.

The first sound may be a brief drain, especially after a cancellation. Let that finish before deciding the new cycle failed.

If the controls accept a cycle but no water enters, find the dishwasher supply valve under the sink. Turn its handle counterclockwise until fully open without forcing a stuck or leaking valve, then try the cycle again. Filling means the supply was closed; no filling with the valve open needs appliance diagnosis.

If the controls accept Start but no wash begins, look for a Demo indication. Demo Mode can leave the controls responsive while filling and pumping stay off. Use only the matching exit sequence, then select a fresh cycle.

A leak warning or continuous pumping appears

A leak warning or continuous pumping can mean water has reached the dishwasher base. If water is under the dishwasher or a leak warning appears, stop these checks, leave it off and arrange appliance service.

Close the identified dishwasher water valve under the sink by turning its handle clockwise. Switch off the dishwasher breaker only if you can reach it safely. If a leak warning beeps, leave power off until the dishwasher is repaired. If standing water blocks access, stay out of it. How to try one control reset

After the power, door, lock and delay checks, record any error code or flashing pattern before one reset. Resetting may erase stored codes.

1. If the panel responds, use its labeled Cancel or Start/Reset control to end the selected cycle. On a panel marked for a long press, hold the control for about 3 to 4 seconds. The previous cycle indication should clear; let any draining finish before selecting another cycle.
2. Unplug the dishwasher if its cord is in the sink or next cabinet, or turn the dishwasher breaker Off. Leave power disconnected for about 1 minute, then restore it. Do not do this if protection has tripped again or another stop sign is present.
3. Choose a fresh cycle and press Start briefly, using the door sequence for the position of your controls. The panel should accept the cycle, followed by a brief pause, drain or filling. If it stays dark despite confirmed power, or fails again after this reset, note that result for the repair quote.

What it costs when the home checks run out

A dead outlet or recurring trip calls for an electrician; a new installation that never worked goes to its installer. For a damaged latch, leak warning or dishwasher unresponsive with confirmed power, call authorized appliance service or a qualified technician. Report the panel behavior or code, outlet-test result, any physical trip, and what happened after the door, settings and single reset checks.

Ask whether the diagnostic fee counts toward an approved repair. A failed latch fits a door that will not catch; an unresponsive panel or returning fault makes a control repair plausible. Have the failed part identified before ordering it.

The replacement combines a standard built-in unit, $160 to $350 for charged delivery and old-unit removal, and $200 to $300 for installation using existing electrical, water and drain connections. A new outlet or water line raises the bill. Difficult access, wiring damage or a return visit can raise a repair quote.

For an out-of-warranty machine, compare the full parts-and-labor quote with the installed price of a comparable replacement. Repair is usually more attractive when it costs less than about half the replacement price, especially if the dishwasher is under about 8 years old. An internal fuse can also leave a powered dishwasher dead, but the technician needs to confirm the actual failed part before pricing that repair.
