Dishwasher Has No Power? Checks to Run Before You Call Anyone

Choose the checks that fit your dishwasher

Notice which lights are actually dark

Check the plug and applicable GFCI outlet

A wall switch needs brand-specific advice

If your GE dishwasher is controlled by a wall switch, make sure that switch is on. Look around the kitchen counter or inside the cabinet under the sink for a switch you don't normally use. GE acknowledges switched installations and says wall switches are required in some areas. Check the household fuse or breaker

Once a Whirlpool dishwasher's power is properly connected, check the household electrical box for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker. The order matters: Whirlpool makes this the next check after the connection, so a properly seated plug leads you to the household supply.

For GE, the instruction is to reset the household fuse or circuit breaker supplying the dishwasher. Give the GE door room to close

On a GE dishwasher, open the door and look for anything keeping it from closing completely. Push a rack fully into place if it's sticking out, and reposition cookware if a pan handle is blocking the door. Those are both obstructions GE identifies.

Then close the door firmly and check that it's tightly closed and correctly latched. The useful result here is complete closure with the obstruction cleared. Try Whirlpool's 30-second control reset

If it's hardwired, turn off the breaker at your home's electrical panel that supplies the dishwasher. Leave it off for 30 seconds, then turn it back on. This branch interrupts power at the breaker, so the reset involves no access to the dishwasher's wiring.

When to contact the installer or service

After the applicable checks, look again at the original symptom: whether the controls illuminate and respond. If the display now lights but the controls remain unresponsive, describe that changed behavior when you seek help. GE identifies that combination separately from the dark, non-responsive condition.
