The home network this router is built to run
- We'd consider this a sensible step up for a household already paying for fast internet and wanting better WiFi 7 coverage.
- Smart Home Master lets you set up to three separate SSIDs for IoT devices, VPN connections or a kids' network.
- 4G LTE and 5G mobile tethering is supported for backup internet if you have a compatible cellular device and service.
If your broadband plan outruns your old router, the ASUS RT-BE90U is built for that upgrade. It's a tri-band WiFi 7 model that can link compatible devices across multiple bands at once through Multi-link operation, so your laptop, console and phone share the airwaves more smoothly. Speeds reach up to 9400 Mbps in the right conditions, and the 6GHz band is there for newer gear.
We recommend it for busy homes that want wired backhaul room to grow. Four 2.5G ports let you decide which carry WAN and which serve LAN, and traffic through those ports gets top priority. You can also add AiMesh extendable units later if you need coverage in a far room.
What this price means for your network budget

Placement, adjustment and daily care
Put it somewhere central and open, not inside a cabinet, because the 6GHz signal in particular drops quickly through walls. The four 2.5G ports give you flexibility: one for your modem, others for a PC, NAS or switch. You choose WAN or LAN roles in the settings.
As for maintenance, the amount of heat it produces and its power draw aren't listed, so check the label if you plan to run it in a closed space. Any firmware updates, security scans or subscription costs for AiProtection should be confirmed before you buy.
When this router is the wrong fit for your home
Skip it if your internet plan is modest and your current router already covers your rooms well. You'd be paying for 2.5G ports and WiFi 7 radios you can't use yet.
Also skip if you need a simple all-in-one that only works with your provider's app, since this one expects you to manage SSIDs and ports yourself. And if your devices are all older WiFi 5 or WiFi 6 gear, the MLO and 6GHz benefits won't show up until you upgrade them too.
