What Does DE Mean on a Washer? What the Code Is Telling You

A dE error code on a washer points to the door. Here's what LG and Samsung say it means, what stops an LG front loader's door locking, and LG's reset.

It's a door code, and your washer sets the details

The quick read
  • On an LG front load washer, dE means the door couldn't lock. LG says a simple reset normally clears it.
  • Samsung's DE/DC means the door isn't securely closed, so read your own brand's code list.
  • First, tuck any fabric fully inside the drum and ease off a tightly packed load.
  • Then run LG's reset with the power cut, press the door in firmly and start a cycle.

The washer has stopped short because it can't confirm the door is shut and locked. We'd look at the door edge and the load before touching the reset, because two of the three causes LG lists, a door that isn't completely closed and a misaligned door, can come straight from how the drum was loaded.

Once the door and load look right, LG's front-load dE page (opens in a new tab) says the issue can normally be resolved with a simple reset, and that's your next move.

We'd also keep this a door-and-load job and stay out of the cabinet. Everything LG asks of you for plain dE happens at the door, the drum, the plug and the control panel.

Why the same letters read a little differently by washer

LG and Samsung each publish their own code guidance, and even within LG the washer type matters. LG's washer error-code list (opens in a new tab) has you pick your washer before it shows any codes, and it describes dE on a front loader differently from dE on a washer with a lid.

What the door code means on each washer covered here
WasherWhat the code meansWhere to start
LG front load washerdE: the washer couldn't lock its doorCheck the door edge and the load, then run LG's reset
LG washer with a liddE: the lid may not be closed properlyClose the lid properly and press START/PAUSE
Samsung washing machineDE/DC: the door isn't securely closedLook for obstructions, improper closure or overloading

On LG washers with a lid, LG adds that the washer won't spin unless the lid is completely locked. That's why its fix for that machine is simply to close the lid properly and press start again.

LG's front-load page also covers codes with a number after the dE, and you choose your exact code there before you see any steps. Match what's on your display before you follow anything, because the steps below are for plain dE.

From here on, the worked example is an LG front load washer. If you own another type or brand, pull up that machine's own code list and follow its steps.

What keeps an LG front loader's door from locking

On an LG front load washer, LG says dE means the washer is unable to lock its door, and it names three things that might cause that.

  • The door isn't closed completely.
  • The door is misaligned.
  • The door latch is defective.

A door that isn't completely closed is the one you can usually spot, since a sleeve or fabric corner caught at the glass or gasket holds it off the seal. LG's own advice about placing items fully inside the drum is aimed at exactly that.

Misalignment is the sneakier one, because LG ties it to two everyday habits: packing the drum tightly, and putting weight on the open door so the hinge takes the strain. Both are things you can change today.

The defective latch is the only cause on the list that's a part rather than a habit. LG's error-code list says most code issues on its washers can be resolved with a few simple troubleshooting steps, which is why the door, the load and the reset come first.

Check the gasket and how full the drum is

Open the door and look along the gasket and the glass for a sleeve or fabric corner poking out, then tuck it fully into the drum. LG wants items placed completely inside so fabric doesn't get trapped between the door, the glass and the gasket, and a trapped edge is what stops a door closing completely.

Next, look at the load itself. LG is fine with a fully loaded drum, but a tightly packed one can force the door out of alignment. If you have to shove clothes back to get the door shut, take a few items out and let the rest sit loosely.

CautionDon't lean on the open door or rest a laundry basket on it while you sort the load. LG warns that weight on the open door, or pushing down on it, strains the hinge and can knock the door out of alignment.

When the gasket is clear and the load is loose, close the door normally. Now you're ready for the reset, with the two causes you can see already dealt with.

LG's reset for a plain dE code

This is LG's dE fix for a front loader (opens in a new tab). The START/PAUSE hold happens with the power disabled, so cut the power at the plug or the breaker, not just with the POWER button.

  1. Press POWER and turn the washer off. The display goes dark.
  2. Unplug the washer. If you can't unplug it, power it off and trip its circuit breaker instead.
  3. With the power disabled, press and hold START/PAUSE for 5 seconds.
  4. Plug the washer back in, or switch the breaker you tripped back on.
  5. Power the washer back on and wait for the display to light up.
  6. Press in firmly on the door.
  7. Select any cycle and press START/PAUSE, then watch the display.

Telling whether the reset did its job

The last step is your test. If the washer takes the cycle you picked and starts without dE on the display, the door locked and you can carry on with the wash.

If dE shows up again, open the door and go back over the gasket and the load before you repeat the reset. Cutting the power won't move fabric caught at the glass or loosen a drum that's packed too tight, so those checks have to be right first.

Keep the loading habits going on the next few loads too. LG gives the same three points, a drum that isn't tightly packed, no weight on the open door and items placed fully inside, as the way to prevent future dE errors.

If your washer is a Samsung

Samsung says its DE/DC code means the door isn't securely closed, and that it often comes from obstructions, improper closure or overloading. The code is triggered when the machine detects the door open during operation.

Samsung describes that check as a safety feature that prevents water leakage. Samsung's UAE English support page (opens in a new tab) says its fix applies to most Samsung washing machines and gives separate step-by-step fixes for front load and top load models, so follow the list that matches yours.

There's real overlap with LG's list. Both point at a door that isn't fully closed, and Samsung's overloading sits close to LG's warning about a tightly packed drum. The reset above is LG's, though, so use Samsung's own steps on a Samsung machine.
