The front door job this lock handles

Before bringing it home
  • Measure your cross bore and door thickness first, since this fits only a standard US deadbolt cutout.
  • Plan your WiFi coverage at the door, because the lock connects directly to your home network for app control.

This is a deadbolt replacement for a standard US entry door. It pairs physical push buttons with a keypad, a key, and app control over WiFi, so you can lock or unlock remotely or hand a code to a cleaner, tenant or guest instead of a spare key. Up to 100 codes can live on it, including one-time and time-limited ones, which is the part that matters if people come and go on a schedule.

We'd consider it for a main entry or a rental door where the WiFi reaches outside. The buttons are worth noting: they work with a gloved hand and don't depend on a touch surface waking up. Auto lock can be set anywhere from 10 to 180 seconds.

It's not for every door. The cross bore needs to be 1-1/2" or 2-1/8" and the door itself 1-3/8" to 2" thick, so measure before you order.

What this price means

The lock is $104.48, down from a typical $123.01 over the last 90 days, about 15 percent off. It's also the lowest price we've seen for this model.

Add the batteries to your real cost. It takes eight AA cells, sold separately, and Philips puts life at up to 6 months at 20 to 30 uses a day. Cheaper cells will land differently, so buy a fresh pack with the lock.

Living with it after install

Battery changes are the recurring chore. The lock beeps below 10 percent and pushes a low-battery alert through the Philips Home Access App, so you'll want that app installed and notifications on.

The deadbolt is rated IP54 and works from -31°F to 150°F, which covers most US entry doors. Clean the exterior with a damp cloth rather than a hose-down, and keep the keypad free of grit so the buttons stay crisp.

When this lock is the wrong pick

Skip it if your door was cut differently, if the door is thicker than 2", or if you need a mortise or glass-door lock. There's no way around those dimensions.

Also think twice if WiFi doesn't reach the door or you'd rather not run a lock from an app. A keypad-only deadbolt would serve you fine and cost less.

If your entry is exposed to salt spray or heavy weather, check how the lock's stated water resistance lines up with your conditions before buying.
